How has the portrayal of women in cosmetics
advertising changed over time?
Advertisement is an inevitable part of our everyday life, embedded in social culture: when one compares images from different periods of time the difference is obvious. Thus, feeling that historical-comparative perspective may provide insight, we decided to investigate the changing portrayal of women in cosmetics advertisements as our research focus.
How does the beauty industry meet the changes of women’s status in society?
The problematisation of advertisements and theoretical framework for our research can be found in the Introduction section.
We used discourse analysis and image analysis to deconstruct and understand the women’s portrayal as well as sociological methodology to get the viewer's perspective, for more detail about the Methodology check the corresponding section.
The final product of our journey is the Timeline, representing the significant for the era campaigns, which are explained withe relation to the socio-cultural context of the period in question.
